All about Beard Grooming Products
Beards have been trending for a while now, however not many know that it needs to be cared for just as much as you would the hair on your head. Beard care does not just involve trimming every now and then. You need to actively care for it to get the best from it. Luckily, there are a range of products that help you get the best of your Mug Rug.
Beard Oils are an oil-based light conditioner, moisturising and softening beard hair as well as moisturising the skin underneath. They help make beards look fuller, softer, and tamer. Due to its liquid form, it's more effective in hydrating the skin through shorter or trimmed beards as opposed to their larger counterparts. Plus, a scented oil can make your beard smell Uh-mazing!!
A Beard balm is the thicker version of a beard oil with a creamy consistency. It can be used in the same way you would an oil. It adds shine, softness, and manageability to beard hair. It is a great product for men with a medium to large-sized beard, but also great if your skin is dryer than most. It has been designed to have a higher viscosity so takes longer to absorb which gives you more nourishing and longer-lasting moisture. This is also what gives your beard some extra shine while keeping it healthy. Although it is not an actual shaping wax, balms have just enough hold so that you can comb down stubborn hairs and fly-aways & can be used as a low-hold styling agent.
Potential side effects of a beard oil/balm?
The types of oils used in beard oils/balms vary greatly. Never use beard oils/balms that contains an ingredient you’re allergic to. If you have an allergic reaction, wash your face immediately to remove the oil and take an antihistamine or other type of allergy medication.
Symptoms include: hives, itching, burning, redness
How to use a beard oil/balm
The best time to apply a beard oil is after showering and shampooing your beard, or after washing your face. This means your pores are open will help your skin absorb it efficiently.
Experiment using the product every day or every other day.
Remember, do not overdo the amount used, or your beard will look greasy (it may take a couple of times to figure out exactly how much you need, especially if you have never used one before):
Put a few drops of oil/scrape a bit of balm out, rub in the palms of your hands and massage it into your entire beard in a downward motion. You’re beard should be damp, but not drenched & work it through your entire beard. If you have a long or thick beard, use a comb to make sure the beard oil gets evenly distributed. Style as needed.
Using both an oil & Balm?
If you're wondering whether you can apply both at the same time, the answer is yes, but be conservative. Using both in appropriate amounts can really level up your beard game, but you can easily overdo it. Start with just a little bit of product, and slowly work your way up to what you need.
